This year’s 4th Parallax Forum aims to respond to the context of working within a post-COVID world by embracing the potential for dialogue across borders, both online and, restrictions permitting, in the real world.

In 2020 artists and institutions have been rapidly adapting to the shifting circumstances within which we are living and working. The Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the Fine Arts Academy in Katowice as part of Parallax network, supported by the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, invite students, artists and cultural practitioners to a series of online seminars about the potential of artists’ residencies in a world where many aspects of our lives and human interactions have become increasingly complicated.

The format of the three seminars in October and November will be moderated discussion panels focusing on key words: Community; Care; and Laboratory. The series will explore the challenges and opportunities currently facing the sector of artists’ residencies. Fundamental questions are raised about how residency programmes might still provide the precious opportunities for artistic experimentation and network building when both foreign travel and coming together in groups is difficult. The seminars will consider new formats of residencies that have emerged, asking how feasible and effective these might be for artists, institutions and audiences. Discussion will also explore the transitory and established communities that grow around residencies, including their local and international dimensions. The series of discussions also aims to facilitate exchange and develop an international network of residency operators through our Online Open Studios segment. In this section various organisations and initiatives running residencies will be able to present their profiles, programmes and residents’ projects during 7-minute slots.

The seminars will act as a springboard from which cross-institution groups of students will be invited to respond to the themes. Groups will collaborate to generate presentations in the form of workshops, artworks or performances that will feature at the 4th Parallax forum, in spring 2021, please contact your joint lead coordinators regarding timetable, coordination and production issues.
